The first question to ask/answer is "Are you sure it's not an IDE CDROM drive?"

I ask because I have a SB16 card with an IDE interface; I used to hang a disk 
drive off it.
I also have a Panasonic CD drive of about that vintage (though I can't lay my 
hands on it just now, it's retired hurt), and I'd describe THAT as old. It has 
an IDE interface too. FWIW it's 4x. I think OS/2 detected it as Matsushita 
CF4, but my memory isn't perfect;-(
