Or actually, just install Red Hat Linux. It should detect an
SMP-capable board if installing it.

Yup. Easy - if your printer is supported, that is.

DDC-probing during install, or provided by Xconfigurator.

Depends on your card, of course - works like a charm here. If
detected, it was automatically configured during the pinstripe
install. 

Hardware configuration is usually easy if your hardware is supported -
which is often a problem.
