They (the average Joe) don't want to have it set up by someone who knows
(nor is this plausible for all n-million households out there). They
want to buy it and plug it in. They aren't going to want to put a new
kernel in because they want one that is "good enough" to start. They
aren't going to want a "dual celeron" because they just want to read
email and browse the web.

Sure, if you're a geek (like most of use are on this list) Linux is
"easy" to use and we love that we can do these tweaks, but compiling a
kernal isn't easy for the average Joe even if it seems damn easy to us.
Hell, they don't even know (or want to know) what a kernel is.
