Wow, thanks for all the info, everyone!

I think I'm still going to go through all the work of compiling
i586/i686 versions of things....I want to set up a network file server
that contains Linux installations for i386/i486/i586/i686, and allow
desktop clients to mount the appropriate architecture.  Not only will
this prepare me for the future, when egcs does a better job with
i586/i686 instructions, but then I can get some really useful
performance measurements (e.g. mount different architectures to the same
machine & benchmark them against each other, and see what the
performance difference is for programs we use every day).

I'll try to send my changes in to RedHat, and if they don't want to
accept them, I guess I'll just be quixotic for a while :-)
