One of our lurker friends asked me to add this to the conversation:

Have the poster look into Open Energy Monitor: https://openenergymonitor.org/emon/ scroll down in the home page to "Solar PV diversion".

This monitor can do an amazing amount of things, many of them independent of RE systems. It might be a resource for a large number of situations, not the least of which is it's original intended purpose, monitoring home energy usage.

And please note that many communities are experiencing decreases in net billing incentives, which means it behooves system owners to use up as much of their net export as possible. For example, folks are starting to heat water with extra PV-made energy, instead of using natural gas. Makes sense to me.

Seems like a very unnecessary complication, The grid is the dump load.

SolarEdge inverters have an export control function if you install an external meter to them. They can be programmed to prevent any net energy export, or to limit that export to a specific amount (if you had a large system with a relatively smaller utility transformer for example).

Here is a link to their system: http://www.solaredge.com/sites/default/files/export_limitation_application_note_NA.pdf

It would limit export power in real time, not energy over time, so if the dump load is to prevent a net monthly export of kWh…¦ then I have no clue.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Grid tie with dump load?

REWs,

I have a client that asked me if i can install a battery free grid tied system and have a dump load activate when it is overproducing.  I am at a loss, here.  Anyone have ideas?  A CT on the line side that would activate a relay while current is flowing to the utility?
Thanks,
Kris
