Ryan had some good information to add here.

Chris and others.
I agree Bergey missed the mark by not advertising a Clipper
upgrade. It will keep the investment safe as well as save wear
and tear on the turbine. The Bergey however was designed to not
exceed a tolerable voltage level for the Classic 250 and this is
the first case of over voltage damage. It could be anything
causing the extra voltage. Some speculations are updraft etc or
it could even be a slightly different characteristic in the
blade makeup.
At the end of the day the marketing department could have
offered a "Clipper Upgrade" and at the time of purchase it would
not have been a big additional expense as the Clipper replaces
the Turbine control box. This could have been marketed towards
customers looking for less noise out of the turbine or in
extremely good wind sites as a safety device.
Something else to keep in mind that Bergey does not advertise is
they have a lower voltage 3 phase stator called the 24MS (This
is not the old 24 volt stator it is significantly higher
voltage) that can be very useful. As of right now they only
suggest the Classic 250 with the Bergey XL1 but in reality if
you are doing a Bergey XL1 on a 12 volt battery then the 24MS
stator, Classic 150 and a Clipper make a much nicer solution as
the Classic 150 can charge up to 96 amps into the 12v battery
compared to the Classic 250 being limited to 61 amps so you get
a third more power for very little extra and the turbine will
not free wheel when the battery is full or the current limit is
met.
