Surrette has a technical bulletin on activating a dry-charged battery
available at http://www.surrette.com/?q=node/46
<http://www.surrette.com/?q=node/46>

It states:

Shelf life of a dry charge battery is five years plus. Store in a cool
dry area. The positive plate has an unlimited shelf life. The negative
plate will revert to lead oxide when in the presence of water and
oxygen. If this should happen, the battery is not ruined, but activation
will take considerably longer!

So, basically unlimited shelf life on dry charged batteries, keep them
cool & dry, but if moisture gets into the cell activation will take a
lot longer. Hope that helps.

Kirpal,

Ask Surrette directly on this. I recall having this done on an order of
batteries being shipped to Africa about ten years ago. They had to be
special ordered without electrolyte (cost more for this - an extra step
for the manufacturer as it was explained to me) and also had to be dried
out and sealed (as I remember) so that there would be no corrosion
inside the cell. I think that the shelf life was a year or less before
they needed to be filled with electrolyte.

Hello All......we have a customer who is interested in storing
some Surrette batteries with no electrolyte as a back up set of
batteries......is there any time period that you would expect these
batteries to remain healthy....do they start losing life after some
time? how long can you store batteries with no electrolyte and still
expect them to remain in good condition when you want to begin using
them?
        Thanks!!!
