I commute to work ~3 times a week. In order to do this, I put my bike on the car and drop the kids off at school. I then park the car by my local park and then ride ~8 miles to work and then back to the car to pick up the kids. It only takes about 15 minutes longer than driving in to work.
In the evenings after the kids sleep, I'll ride the trainer a few times a week. My longest ride this year has been 1.5 hours on the triplet with my kids. I'm planning to ride a 300k in March with basically just the commute and trainer riding. It can be done, but the riding that I do on the trainer is high exertion interval training.
