I switched to Crank Bros eggbeaters (various flavors) on most of my bikes several years ago. Super easy in and out, lots of float, and unaffected by dirt and mud.
My very favorite pair of shoes (I call them my "lucky shoes," and they've been from Sacramento to Seattle and across France and back, plus lots of other miles) are a pair of Specialized Body Glove (BG) mountain bike shoes that I bought from someone in the local bike club for about $10. There's a level of comfort and fit in those shoes that I haven't been able to match, even with a newer pair of BG shoes. I now use them sparingly for special rides, in the hope of having them last a few more years. Tires?
