It seems like you usually have the brake levers or thumbies taking up a little real estate, and the others in the bar ends. I choose to have the shifters in the bar ends (they are called bar ends shifters, after all, and you don't have to buy the extra hardware) and the brake levers taking up the real estate - more options to find the kind you like... unless you LOVE reverse brake levers, then go with that.
