Portland is at the top of Oregon, and Crater Lake is all the way down at the bottom of the state. Easiest way to get there would be to take the train to Klamath Falls, probably; Crater Lake National Park is about a 40 mile ride from Klamath Falls. There's a campground at the base of the hill you have to climb to get to the rim.
