I use either mode and am equally happy. If the drivetrain is made up of older, 
fussy parts, it's friction. If its got the more modern stuff (that means 8 or 9 
speed shimano for me), I index. Unlike some people on the interwebs, I find 
adjusting a modern drivetrain for indexing is no problem. Interestingly, I set 
up my wife's 2 bikes with bar ends and indexing and she's been qvelling about 
it ever since. All she wants to know about her bikes is: do they have upright 
bars, bar end shifters, and indexing? Well, she doesn't even ask about the 
indexing anymore. She just assumes it's there or there will be trouble for me. 
;)

But for me, manual, indexed, whatever. It's truly all good and frankly, I like 
the variety. As usual, YMMV and the OP should, decide based on personal 
preference.
