As you ride more, this will improve. Riding at a pace (no matter how slow) that you can enjoy the ride in and the surroundings you ride through helps immensely. The improvement curve on stamina is usually quick. Hills for me are definitely different than flat. I use other muscles to climb than go flat and I can tell when they are out of practice on the first hill!
