I can see it being done. Especially with low-tier Shimano components. (Think Tiagra or no-name). Most of which appear to work just fine. And there is probably a modern equivalent of old seamed, straight gauge tubing. The wheels might be the toughest part. It's something I'll keep an eye on, although I do have two Surly bikes that fulfill the role of "beater" (or better) quite well. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN
