It sounds like it's time to make a day trip to Harris Cyclery or Rivendell HQ. You'll probably have to take a red eye back to NYC for the trip to SFO, but that'll give you more time. Maybe you can hit up Jitensha in Berkeley also.
Not to complicate things even more, but have you considered the 55cm Betty Foy? It's 650B and your PBH is within its range. The ride is really smooth and lively. One friend with a lot of biking experience says that "it rides like butter." I often find myself taking wife's Betty Foy over the Sam if situation allows. And it'll be great to a child seat on (aren't you looking to put a child seat on the bike?). With a child seat, you can't cross over your leg over the back of the bike (the seat will be in the way). You'll have to cross over the top tube, which can be quite annoying/challenging. With a mixte, this won't be an issue. Just another thing to consider.
