I have ridden this portion of the trail on Panaracer Pasela 32s Non-TG and was just fine. 5 of us rode from Pittsburgh to DC in 5 days and had nary a flat among us. Tires ranged from 28mm "touring tires" to lightweight Vittoria Cyclocross tires.
