Rather than stir up an argument here-  and since this thread began with 
recommended reading-  I would just like to recommend a couple of books that 
would answer your question, and perhaps add some perspective to the whole 
idea of mounting a camera on the dashboard of an _automobile_ to illustrate 
the 'pinch' that pedestrians are feeling from bicycles.

"Stop Signs:  Cars and Capitalism", by Yves Engler and Bianca Mugyenyi,

And 

"Collapse", by Jared Diamond, which might fairly be viewed as the sequel to 
"Guns, Germs, and Steel", and which will both fascinate and scare the shit 
out of you, if you have a pulse.
