FYI: Tonight is my first short-track mountain bike race. I am racing a
singlespeed bike.
Pedal of choice is a Crank Bros. 5050XX (sealed bearings), every hole
loaded with a traction pin.
(That's ten pins per side.)
No shin guards. (They're cumbersome, and any core sample I might take
from my shin is pretty tiny.)
(In a concession to the terrain I DO wear some PI X-Alp Seek mountain
bike shoes, with the cleat holes covered. The stiffer sole seems to
help.)
When I line up with the other women they all stare at my pedals in
fear; someone always tries not to line up right next to me.
I have been scolded on two occasions for not using clipless pedals,
each time the racer insisting that my pedals posed a safety problem
for HER.
(And each time I've told the racer not to worry, as she would
eventually wind up lapping me on the course anyway.)

Just another resounding vote for flat pedals.
