It should work fine.  Although, I was just thinking today that I've
never had a better shifting derailleur than the Deore LX on my Bleriot
(8 speed w/friction).  Not nearly as cool looking as that XTR but It
is so smooth and requires absolutely no thought to get it in the
correct gear... (perfect for my brain!).  I just stumbled onto an Ebay
auction for them with a buy it now of $20...search SHIMANO DEORE LX RD-
T661... and bought one for my Rambouilllet...GOOD BYE reverse action!
No idea who the seller is, or if it will show up, but it looks legit.
