I generally don't bother. They are handy on tours in unknown areas for keeping track of distance. I lost the receiving unit a couple of years ago on Day 1 of a 2 week tour, didn't miss it much & haven't replaced it. Here in the US most places have decent milepost systems & the rest of the world favors big kilometer blocks on major roads. A computer is handy on un-marked & secondary roads. I think it's a comfort factor more than a real necessity.
