I find a computer especially helpful when I am on tour. I use it (sometimes
along with a map or notes I have made prior to the trip) to kind of pace
myself and know when to expect turns, opportunities to buy food and drink
and places to camp. I even use it to ration water and other consumables -
figuring I can consume x quantity every 5 miles, etc. before resupply. This
is handy when I am running low but need nourishment.

It is true that sometimes having a computer provides the opportunity to kind
of "watch the clock," which might make it seem to take longer for a given
destination to come around.

There is also the occasional trip that is a milestone or record-setter and I
like to know about that, especially when people ask. For example - I rode
103 fully-loaded miles on my LHT one day last summer from Bemidji MN to
Brainerd MN and that was my actual mileage not just a figure taken from some
map, etc. It meant more to me that I saw it on my computer than it would
have just knowing it is approximately 100 miles between those 2 towns.

Knowing when to expect a turn and thus being able to identify the correct
turn, is the most important use for me.

On my usual day rides from my house it makes almost no difference and I pay
almost no attention.
