I want to toss in a non-snarky comment to, not so much contradict but
to supplement Fai Mao's and Jim's comments on versatile bikes. I have
a '99 custom gofast 571 wheel Riv fixed gear that Grant built at my
insistence without fender or rack brazeons, rd hangar, dt shifter
brazeons or cable housing guides. It has clearance for 571 X 28s with
fenders, no more -- but I don't want fenders on it. It is a wonderful
bike: sub 18 lb in a 57 with no stupid light parts and exhibits the
wonderful fit and handling of other Rivs. I would not swap this one
out for a more versatile bike, but then most of my riding is short,
hard (ish) fixed gear riding. I do have a very similar Curt custom
that has fenders, rack and lighting but otherwise fits and feels
identical.

Back to ideal bikes: for me, the steel track bike is a kind of beau
ideal (bo ideeyall') -- I still covet, somewhat, my brother's 1968
Paramount track bike, which my brother just said, must be a custom
because it has road bike clearances and handles almost like my Rivs.
