You worry too much. You unscrew it all the way and it comes apart. You screw it together all the way and it is fastened, and there is no loss of shifting precision. Those splitters are extremely precisely made, which explains why they cost so much for their insignificant size. I've used them. "Proper torque" is you screw it tight without tools until it's screwed home and it bottoms out.
