I use a Sharpie. I've found that the proper height varies a bit from year to year depending on my level of fitness and flexibility, and the type of shoes and shorts I'm wearing. But it's usually a difference of a few millimeters at most. A centimeter sounds huge to me, so it does not surprise me that you notice a dramatic difference there.
