I also have gone back to drops after trying most of everthing else, this for
comfort reasons. Again, horses for courses, but I too find myself going into
the hooks for comfort or for more power without more exertion.

As to JimG's note: a proper saddle position will have your torso
cantilevering your weight over the bars so that less falls on your arms,
shoulders and hands. This cantilevering effect is produced by having your
butt back and calling into play those strong back (and perhaps other) torso
muscles. I can ride in the hooks with top of bar 2" below saddle for half an
hour easily -- well, let's say 20 minutes easily, since after that I start
getting a numbness in the heel of my left palm, tho' with hand movement I
can go longer. No problem with the right hand. (The left palm heel is
exactly what gave me pain with straight bars, tourist bars, M-bars and AT4s
and the like, and this after just a few minutes.)

Anyway, as with saddles, bars and placements are very personal.
