I use a White Ind. Eno freewheel with 16/18t cogs, and an ACS 22t freewheel on the other side. When I'm on the 40t gear up front, I usually switch between the 16/18t cogs twice on the way to work, which is a relatively long commute with a pretty mean hilly part in the middle. Sometimes if I'm going to be on a particularly hilly road, I'll flip the wheel to the 22t and place the chain on the 32t front ring, or just leave it on the 40t.
If I took out a link I'd lose the ability to run 40/22, but would gain the ability to run 32/18 ratio on the other side. I like the current options though, because it gives me two gears on either side of the wheel, and never places the wheel on the extreme ends of the dropouts. I suppose I *could* run 32/18 right now, but it puts the wheel way back toward the end of the dropout, and I don't like that, especially since I use fenders. The ratios I currently use are: 40/16 (~69 in) 40/18 (~61 in) 40/22 (~50 in) 32/22 (~39 in) The dropout is about 5cm long and easily accommodate the 4 ratios I use, without jamming the wheel all the way to the front of the dropouts, nor hanging it precariously near the ends. Rivendell is serious when they talk about how long it takes to shift- once you get used to it, shifts on the same side (no wheel removal) take about 15 seconds, and if you have to flip the wheel it's probably 30 seconds if you don't want to get your hands dirty :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
