Birders and what-have-yous have zero cultural relevance. There are very few stereotypes about bird-watchers. No one would know if the comparison was apt or not, so they wouldn't know if it was funny. I think you need a grounding in 1990s rec.bicycles.tech to even know that Jobst Brandt is "the uber- curmudgeon."
