No so much the poking fun, but the comparison.

Even an entry level understanding of cosmology is enough to show Star
Trek is an absurd impossible fantasy (eg., Paul Davies,'The Eerie
Silence') .  On the other hand, a Rando style bike is arguably as good
a way to credit card tour as any.

If BSNYC wanted to compare Randos to nerds, he should have used nerds
with nerding after something outside of the realm of fantasy, such as
amateur astronomers or birders.  Even trainspotters would have made
more sense.
