Is it possible, do you think, that he doesn't understand either
randonneuring or Star Trek?  

>From what I can see, there isn't anything even remotely "retro-grouch"
about randonneurs.  They're all about getting the job done.  Look at the
high-tech lighting systems if you have any doubt of it.  If somebody
confuses the presence of fenders with nostalgia for the past or with a
rejection of modern values, whatever they are, he mustn't ride long
distances in the rain.
