I have had great luck with the boutique cycling clothes manufacturers - Rivendell prominent among them. The only big brand garments I use regularly for cycling are Patagonia climbing shorts (one pair from when they were still made in the U.S., the other two made in Colombia) which work well for my riding style anyway and seem unlikely to die anytime soon.
