Sometime when you're in an area frequented by MTBers, stop & just listen for a while. You'll understand why hikers & birders get annoyed with bikers. Even if the riders aren't whooping & hollering to each other, a bicycle makes a fair bit of mechanical noise when ridden aggressively. I look at off-road cycling as an extension of hiking, with the same courtesy to other trail users as part of the deal.
