I change my mind on this every 3 months, so good luck with my advice!

I was back to index (rear), then got a new Atlantis with 9-speed Shimano
bar-ends and XT derailer that just doesn't want to index cleanly. I did a bar
swap last week and the only thing I had around was a vintage 7-speed Suntour
thumby, so I mounted it and put in friction. Perfect! For street riding* it's
actually easier to guess the travel and snick into the next cog without pushing
through a click and hoping the chain doesn't rattle. Ask me again in 3 months!

*Does not apply on singletrack. You need index for that.
