Speaking as a mechanic, one thing that we see a lot of is people taking a 
perfectly working bike, putting it in a car or on a rack, getting it home and 
then it is no longer working. Often it is a cable housing that has has been 
nudged or knocked out of a cable stop but there are a range of things that 
could have happened.

I'm not saying that this is what happened here, but it is a possibility.
