If you want to shave some time off the trip, I'd start near the middle at Marina Del Rey and take that up to Will Rogers.
Nothing against starting from the south end, but the stretch from Manhattan Beach up to Playa Del Rey is somewhat unspectacular unless you like airports and oil refineries. There are bike rental places near Washington and Pacific at the Venice/MDR border. Let me know if you'd like some more Westside intel?
