O’Ryan of Michigan,
Surfing. This former citizen of God’s Country (ND/MN) has a deep and abiding
irrational fear of Great White sharks. I have watched Shark Week for YEARS, and
there is no going back; I cannot unknow what I know. And what I know is
certain: they are waiting - with their soulless black eyes and rows of razor
teeth - WAITING for me down there in the deep. So, this rules out surfing
unless it’s in my swimming pool on a windy day. And so far that has met with
poor results. Also on the list of irrational fears: flat tires, furniture
shopping, and necrotizing fasciitis. But, the right boots to wear surfing would
be ones with a wicked blade affixed to the toe for self-defense against the
shark.

Back to bike trips.

So we all gathered at breakfast and J asked, “Well, did we decide what we’re
going to do this weekend?”

I did my best pitch. I emphasized BEACH TOWNS and OCEAN SIDE and COOL FOOD
VENUES and casually mentioned there would be a little tiny bit of 40 miles of
biking and I was met with silence and suspicion emanating from three pairs of
eyes at the table. I could see them telepathically working together to thwart
my 40 mile bike ride plans. Ganging up on me silently, that’s what they were
doing. There comes a time when a woman knows she’s going to have to switch
tactics.

“You know what I’d really like for my birthday next month?” I said in a velvety
voice.

They were left defenseless. There was really no other option when I pulled out
the birthday card.

“Can I rent one of those bikes with a motor on it?” asked J.

I winced. “Ok,” I said, “so we just leave the Clem home?”

“No, we need the Clem for the pictures!” he said. “We’ll simply hide the e-bike
and pose with the Clem.”

So, I am just going to strap the Clem to my rear rack. Because pictures are
important! And also, family harmony.

So that, my friends, is the current plan. There’s a 3 day weekend coming in
Feb, and I’m pointing my Bosco bull moose bars toward it.
