if you/family havent been here before, and don't live near an ocean, i'd recommend riding the bike path from marina del rey into malibu. you'd hit the venice boardwalk (you could even drop into the canals), santa monica, the pier and third street if you want, and some nice coastline a little further north with some decent restaurants. it's totally flat with a ton of stuff to stop and do and see to keep the kids engaged. the only downside is that coming back, you'd see all the same stuff. I think a lot of us who live here, like Irvine because it can feel more "outdoors" than most of the urban LA area, but if you come from a more outdoorsy place, I worry it might be disappointing.
