'cause I'm not designing from an existing bike, I'm specing my custom. The Rivendell Mountain used 26" wheels because that's what mtbs used when that bike was built; now the hot ticket is 27.5, which I like better for ride and looks. Also there's a boatload of tires available, which looks to be a waning situation for 26.
