You are right, Neil. The Compass nobbies wear faster than I’d like them to, but they also grip spectacularly. I’m happy to pay to trade up for that. I have a new pair of Barlows I’ll try once snow season passes (June), and compare which I prefer for six months of the year. The knobbies are brilliant on snow, so that’s an easy call. Also, the plush of the tires with the knobbies helps them feel like a 44 or so tire on the trails, loose gravel, etc. I know Jan says no difference between barlow and Steilacoom in loose gravel or sand, but I’ve found that when there is a wet layer under, knobbies grip better, which still jives with Jan as he says knobbies cut through the top layer to grip a firmer surface beneith. Greater adhesion of wet loose stuff under loose dry stuff on top. If that makes sense.
