Both Andy and WETH pointed to the issue here. If lowering the FD still does not clear the lower indentation of the inner plate, the sure, use another FD. A double will work just fine, at least with the ones I am familiar with that are 9 sp. and and lower and Shimano or Suntour that have the nice long, deep drop cagees. There are few old SunTour that have shorter cages. A 14t difference is well with their capacity. I once used a 105 FD-5500 double to shift a 7 sp. 13-32 and 24/44/48, worked great ! I'm using that same FD now with 36-50 rings. FD's have a huge capacity. you need not spent much for such a FD either. Ebay has a ton of 28.6 clamp on double FD's !
