I suspect you're right. I rode to work this morning against an 18 mph headwind that was coming at me diagonally (which made balancing interesting). Sand was peppering my legs and I had a layer at the end of my ride. It looks like my best bet is to go with the wax products mentioned before and be extra vigilant about cleaning the bike.
I appreciate the advice from all. If this is the price of the ride, it's well worth it.
