Matt B and LBieriot: I'm a fan of fenders, both for prolonging the life of bike and tires and also for completing the look of the bike. Currently, I'm running 52 mm Big Bens and have little give for fender clearance. Part of the point of getting this bike was the ability to have big fat tires I could run at a low psi. I would be willing to drop to a 48 mm but am concerned about other aspects of sand, i.e.clogging the fenders.
