Fenders should take care of most of the grit, but the drivetrain is cheap to replace compared to the frame. Riding and storing your steel frame near the sea will result in corrosion. And quick. Make sure that you treat the inside of your frame. Also, rinse and wax the frame and lube all of the bolts. I usually soap and hose off the cassette after it cruds up. Regularly pulling and lubing the BB shell is also a good idea.
