+1 on Ron's take on Suntour RDs. I have several in my "on deck" drawer of
the toolbox. Just can't do better for the price. They simply shed wear
unless subjected to truly terrible conditions or physical maladies.

Shameless "WTB/Crowdsourcing" plug: I'm on an odyssey for a *Mavic 845
rear derailleur*. In the meantime I have had a Suntour XC Pro mid-cage on
my Rambouillet, operated by Power Ratchet bar-end shifters in friction mode
on a Shimano 8-speed cassette. I am also a fan of Suntour front derailleurs
of both the shaped and flat plate cages. The X-1 FD is a great,
cost-effective unit for 110mm BCD doubles (wide or typical) and triples. I
have one that has been in constant daily use on my series of commuters
since 2007.

Feel free to contact me with details of any long cage Mavic rear
derailleurs you may have laying around. We can discuss family treasure,
filthy lucre, or other rare parts swaps.
