Pavement is a lot more intrusive and destructive than even the most well-worn path. From the excavation of petroleum to the energy required for distillation of asphalt, to the modification of the land through which pavement is lain. Roads may necessary, and may be for riding on, but to say that bicycles are for riding on roads would be preposterous. I can't even get my head around that statement.
