That Joshua Tree route is very nice, though it can also get very
windy. I'd go to that ride if I was still in So Cal. Hwy 62 is not
much fun. Cars go fast and mostly not much of a shoulder. You are also
occasionally treated to very low flying Marine Corps jets from the air
base in 29 Palms. And by low flying, I mean like 100 feet off the
ground.

Hwy 243 is a hilly ride. You're going from near 0 in Palm Springs to
6,000' or more. You get a nice long, curvy downhill to Banning though.
Idyllwild is a nice mountain get-away town and has some good food. I
was partial to the Red Kettle, which has breakfast all day.

It's legal to ride the freeway between Cabazon and 111, but not very
pleasant. There are a lot of fire roads running from Cabazon to
service the windmills. I don't know if you're allowed to ride them,
but it would make a nice bit of mixed terrain to complete your loop.
