Hi Ken,

Check if this route from Banning to PS suits you:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/27498

Basically, it's frontage road (Johnson, Main, Railroad) out to the
last on/offramp (Verbenia) before entering the desert. At Verbenia,
you'd need to get onto I-10 for about 1000' as you get on Hwy 111. I
can't tell you about the condition of the frontage roads as I've not
traveled them. Since you'd be riding through tribal land, I think
it'd best to plan this section of the ride well and be aware of
alternative routing.

You can create some great "in-town" routes that allow you to travel
between the desert communities but will not feel "urban" at all.
There's also ample open road, especially south & east of La Quinta and
in the vicinity of (and north of) I-10. Lots of possibilities,
especially once you leave the immediate Palm Springs/Cathedral City
area.

I live in the desert and am certainly interested in any rides that the
SoCal group anticipates in the future.

-Eric

P.S. Ken, you must be one ambitious rider if you're considering
taking 243!
