"Will riding a Rivendell make me self-conscious or overly worrisome?"

Over-worrying is part of the deal. You'll fit right in. After you've
ridden the bike for a year or so, you can start to relax.

I would say that if you go on a typical group ride with a Hillborne,
you should be prepared to answer questions and defend thinly-veiled
suggestions pertaining to your questionable judgment. Especially if
you go headlong into RBW suggestions about flat pedals and loose
clothing. Nothing says "novice looking for unsolicited advice" like
flat pedals and loose clothing. At that point, if you're able, drop
the hammer and show 'em you're not to be trifled with.

I have a pretty flashy candy-apple red custom touring bike, and
originally I had creme-colored Schwalbe Fat Frank tires on it. I must
admit that on the first ride, I was a little self-conscious pedaling
such a pimp-mobile. A layer of dirt helped a lot.
