I always assumed it was devised to make shifting faster, with less effort, in the peloton: Faster buys you milliseconds in the sprint, less effort saves your hands on stage races where you're doing crazy miles for a week or more. I'm not sure this translates to a need in recreational riding, but some folks are willing to pay for the benefits.
