The only truly distinctive feature I can point to for electronic shifting is that you can put the buttons where you need them, and you can have more than one per derailleur. Not crucial for the riding most of us do, perhaps, but on a time trial bike the ability to shift either on the aero bars or on the outer bullhorns, while maintaining control of the bike, could conceivably make a difference in a race.
