Sounds like he's already riding them as though they are not clipless
pedals, since he went 45 min without noticing he had sneakers on.  I
can't ride more than a pedal rotation without noticing I don't have on
my cycling shoes, because as my foot comes around the bottom and I
pull upward, my foot rises off the pedal.  It makes the transition to
riding my snow/extreme-cold bike more awkward, since I don't have
clipless pedals on it.  As I hit the base of hills, my feet keep
popping off the pedals as I pull up on the back of the rotation, only
to remember I'm not clipped in.
